「高知の思い出」 ケイト　M　マレクダン 　1997年に文化交流プログラムで一週間高知に来ましたが、日本の文化を理解するにはあまりにも短かすぎました。そのプログラムは、歌や踊りを通してフィリピンの、特に高知県と姉妹提携を結んでいるベンゲット州の文化を紹介することが目的でした。私たちは東津野村に滞在しました。短期間だったので、高知の人々と十分な交流をすることはできませんでした。 　今年、専門分野である看護の研修が目的で再び来高しましたが、初めて日本を訪れた時とは全く違う経験となりました。今回は、日米学院の親切な先生のもとで日本語の基礎を勉強しました。そのおかげで、仕事や生活を通して高知の人々としっかり交流することができ、日本の文化や価値観、生活をより深く知ることができました。 　主な研修先であった安芸病院や、その他の病院での研修では、彼らの能率的、効果的、そして献身的な仕事ぶりを見て、どうして患者さんがそれほど彼らを評価し、尊敬するのかを理解することができました。病院で私が出会い、友達になった人々の笑顔と親切は、言葉の壁を越えて私を受け入れてくれました。 　高知の人々は働く時間と遊ぶ時間を実にうまく使い分けています。パーティーでは、彼らのライフスタイルをより知ることができました。そこでは、彼ら自身のことや経験談、仕事、ライフスタイルなどについて気軽に聞くことができます。みんなの優しさは、フィリピンから遠く離れたこの高知を故郷のように感じさせてくれました。 　高知県での研修中に、私を支援、指導してくださった皆さんのことはいつまでも忘れません。 　励ましの言葉をかけてくれてどうもありがとうございました。高知での経験は忘れることのない大切な思い出です。 　最後に、安芸病院でお世話になった皆さんに心から感謝を申し上げます。将来、皆さんと一緒にまた働けるチャンスがあることを願っています。 Memories of Kochi by　Kate M. Malecdon 　　　Coming to Kochi in 1997 for a one week cultural exchange program was a very brief period to understand its culture. My group came for the purpose of presenting Philippino particularly Benguet culture( Benguet being a sister province of Kochi) through songs and dances. We stayed in Higashitsuno-mura. Our short visit did not provide enough time for enough interaction amongst the people of Kochi. 　　　This year I came back to Kochi purposely for training in my field of profession, nursing. It was a very different experience from my first visit. This time, I had to learn the basics of the Japanese language through the patience of Nichibeiﾕs Japanese teachers. Armed with the knowledge of Nihongo, I was able to interact with the people of Kochi through working and living with them. This gave me an opportunity to better understand their culture, values and way of living. 　　　Observing and practicing Nursing Techniques in Aki Hospital, the main training center, and in the other hospitals represented my training in the field of nursing. Seeing their efficiency, effect and dedication in the performance of their work made me realize the reason why their clients valued and respected them so much. The smiles and kindness of the people in the hospital whom I met and become friends with made me feel accepted despite the language barrier. During my stay with them, verbal and non-verbal communication led to a way of teaching and learning. 　　　Indeed, to the people of Kochi, there is a time for work and time for play. Partying with them made me understand more about their lifestyle. It is at this time when you can freely ask them about themselves, their life experiences, their work and basically their lifestyle. For me, the peopleﾕs friendliness had made this distant place a home to live in. 　　　To all the people who, in one way or another, helped and taught me during my training and my stay, you will always be a part of me.Thank you very much for the words of encouragement, and my Kochi experience will always be a memory to treasure… 　　　Lastly, my heartfelt gratitude to Aki Hospitalﾕs personnel.
